騰衝與緬甸接壤的邊境一帶原始老林里，盛產一種質地堅韌、身條極長的藤本植物——藤條，其外皮色澤光潤，手感平滑，彈性極佳，似蔑而非蔑，故稱藤蔑，是一種上好的天然編織材料。騰衝人用此編制的藤椅、藤箱等日常用具工藝精巧，品種多樣，經久耐用，古往今來深受消費者喜愛。

藤編一般經過打藤（削去藤上的節疤）、揀藤、洗藤、曬藤、拗藤、拉藤(刨藤)、削藤、漂白、染色、編織、上油漆等十幾道工序。藤編主要以藤枝、藤芯或竹為骨架，然後用藤皮或幼嫩的藤芯編織而成，充分發揮藤條柔軟、不易折斷的特點。
